The Rum Old Fashioned: If You're Not Already Drinking It, It's Time To Start

I adore Old Fashioneds made with rum — it’s my go-to cocktail to make at home. It’s easy to make, easy to drink, and they taste phenomenal. It also gives you an excuse to buy more good rums, by which I mean without sugar or other additives put in after distillation. I went around for years blithely assuming everyone drank rum Old Fashioneds until the great and good drinks writer Robert Simonson’s excellent book on the topic was released. I didn’t know him too well, but at the release party we started chatting, and when I told him my go-to Old Fashioned is with rum, he gave me a quizzical look. “Hmmm, I don’t meet too many rum Old Fashioned drinkers,” he said. Of course, his book includes it, although the rums he recommends are, for my money, too sweet for the drink unless you’re not adding sugar.
