It's An Ashtray! It's A Coaster! It's A Horseshoe!

A few months ago, I started a fun job writing for Robb Vices. Formerly a part of Robb Report, where I also write, Robb Vices is now a subscription service where, each month, you get a box of cool stuff, ranging from a rare bottle of whisky to flavored popcorn to a cashmere scarf. My job is to write about the products, and in many cases interview their makers, for the magazine that comes in the box. It’s closer to ad copy than journalism, since I’m obviously not going to write anything negative about products that people have already received — my job is to get them excited to check them out. Since both my parents were in advertising, I feel like I’m following in their footsteps, and I’m proud to do so.

Some products resonate with me more than others, and one of them was something which, if I’m going to be perfectly honest, I have no need for. The Kentucky Double is a combo coaster/ashtray, meticulously crafted using the finest materials, including a genuine horseshoe worn by horses racing at the Kentucky Derby. It’s the perfect accessory for cigar smokers and whiskey drinkers. Only thing is, I don’t smoke cigars (not in the house, at least — my wife would kill me) and I already have more coasters than I know what to do with. But I’ve decided I not only want it, I need it. Not only that, I showed it to my 9 year old daughter and SHE’s decided she needs it, too. We’re still debating whether we can share one or if we both need our own.
