It's Been A Week

Bobby Darin, swingin’ on Park Ave. sometime in the late ‘50s. This pic has nothing to do with anything I’ve been working on, but I do love his music and it’s a cool photo.

Every year, starting right after Labor Day and going into December, PR firms and liquor brands join forces to to shorten the lifespan of drinks writers by scheduling day and evening events, tastings, dinners, lunches, press trips and more, and using those opportunities to stuff us full of unhealthy food and large quantities of (mostly very fine) spirits and cocktails. It’s a rare day when we don’t have somewhere to go and something to drink, and it’s not uncommon for us to have multiple such invitations in one day. Yesterday, for instance, I had a tequila breakfast, a rum tasting (via Zoom) at lunchtime, and a combo gin/whisky event in the evening.

To people who are not in this business, it does, I admit, seem like a very weird thing to complain about. Getting wined and dined on a daily basis? Cue the violins. And I absolutely agree that individually, these events are all wonderful. Collectively, though, they make me feel, to paraphrase the legendary Kara Newman, like human foie gras. And I’ll bet my liver would taste pretty good spread on toast right now.

All this is to tell you, in a roundabout way, that I had two articles published earlier this week and I totally forgot to mention it until now (I’m writing this on Friday). But hey, great booze is timeless, as is more-or-less competent writing. So if you want to read about my latest Whisk(e)y Of The Week — a banger from Dewar’s — head over to Forbes (link is right -> HERE <-). And bless the good folks at Alcohol Professor for publishing another What’s Tony Drinking? so soon after the last one to help get caught up. I wrote it during those halcyon days of summer, when going out drinking seemed much less oppressive than it does lately. I hope you read it in that spirit. Link is -> HERE <-.

And I promise, I’ll try not to complain so much next time … if I live that long.
