Why Does Chill Filtration Get The Cold Shoulder From American Whiskey Fans?
When I visited Michter’s Shively distillery last September, we were given a tour by their Master of Maturation, Andrea Wilson. Michter’s is the most vocal proponent of chill filtration of all Kentucky distilleries, maybe of all American distilleries. I wound up getting into a pretty intense discussion about the pros and cons of chill filtering with Heather Greene and Sukinder Singh, and that led to this article. I learned a lot, both about the technical side of chill filtering and just how widespread it is, especially among the bigger American distilleries.
