I Don't Normally Drink Single Malts From Utah, But When I Do....

I take a pretty good bottle pic, don’t I? (Photo by me)

American single malts have been gaining steam for several years now, with more distilleries making them and better expressions hitting shelves seemingly on a monthly basis. It’s supposedly the fastest growing whiskey category in the States, according to some article I read somewhere. I’ve had some great ones — Westland and Westward spring to mind instantly as two of the best — and yet I’ve never been able to really, you know, care about them one way or the other. It’s not a category I ever order when I’m out drinking at a bar, and I taste them at home pretty much exclusively for work.

So when I got a bottle of High West’s newest iteration of their High Country American Single Malt, my interest was… minimal. The main reason I cracked it was because I was headed to Park City, Utah, where High West is based (for the world premiere of my daughter’s professional acting debut at the Sundance Film Festival, no big whoop), and I figured I should get acquainted with it before attempting to snag a distillery tour. I didn’t wind up going to the distillery, but I did wind up falling in love with High West. To read about it — and my daughter and the film she’s in, natch — check out my latest for Forbes!
